Bar owners want legalized video gambling

Revamped liquor laws are killing bars' takeout beer sales

York County bar and tavern owners want video gambling legalized to replace the income they have lost to grocery and convenience stores who now can sell beer-to-go cheaper than they can.

Danette Shultz, co-owner of BrewTaGo and representative of the York County License Beverage Association, said Wednesday that the small businesses that depended on six-pack sales as a significant part of their income got broadsided when the state legalized the sale ofbeer -- by the bottle, six-pack and 12-pack -- at grocery and convenience stores.

Shultz said the sales at her York Township beer store have dropped 15 percent a year since other outlets have been allowed to sell beer.
